Local Photographer to Celebrate his 75th with Exhibition

New Jersey born Tucson photographer Harold Jones will have an exhibition of inkjet prints of recent works in October 2015, to celebrate his 75th birthday. The exhibition, from October 6 – 24, titled “Ode to Godot” will be at the CosmoArt Studio in the Sea of Glass Center for the Arts in the West University neighborhood.

In October 2011, in their centenary edition, the Arizona Daily Star named Jones as one of five Best Arizona Photographers of the last century. He has not had an exhibition of his work in town for over five years although during that time his work has been included in numerous national museum and gallery exhibitions as well as many photography publications. The work in this exhibition has never been exhibited anywhere previously.

In 1975 Jones was appointed the founding Director of the Center for Creative Photography and then went on to start the Photography Program at the University of Arizona Department of Art, where he taught for the next 30 years. Presently he is retired professor emeritus and Volunteer Coordinator of the Voices of Photography oral history project at the Center.

As a young photography student working in the darkroom late one night Jones heard “Waiting for Godot” on the radio. The play greatly influenced him and his work. Jones’s photographs are full of fun and mystery. He sees the familiar --- his home, family, neighborhood --- with eyes of a cosmic traveler who knows the vast resonances of ordinary life. Uncanny thrills, a narrowing of the space and time between near and far, and transfixing strangeness convey Jones’s loving clarity.

Cosmo Art Studio in the Sea of Glass Art Center is located at 330 East 7th Street one block west of 4th Avenue. Tuesday thru Saturday 10– 4. (520)-624-4418 #30
