The exhibition within these galleries presents five camera obscura projections by artist Richard Torchia. Each work has been conceived within the context of Southern Arizona's unique natural and cultural environment. The Center for Creative Photography tenders these new works as photography at its most elementalthe transformation of the visible world through focused reflected light, literally "light drawing." Seventh in the Center's Encounters series dedicated to innovative contemporary photography, this exhibition brings audiences the rarely seen camera obscura technique both as a model of pre-photography (used centuries before the fixed photographic image was invented) and as a vanguard approach in current aesthetic practice. The artist has created a direct experience that asserts itself as a necessary complement to our increasingly mediated perception of imagery, from the printed page and television to the digital and the virtual. Richard Torchia is the consummate observer, and his art helps return viewers to the wonder in both seeing and knowing available before us.
